April 25 - Day 13
Waking up this morning, I felt a lump in my throat, knowing I would leave a large piece of my heart in Louga. Words cannot adequately express the profound impression this city and its people have left on me. The memories, laughter, and bonds formed here will be cherished for a lifetime.
From the bleating of goats serving as my alarm clock from our second-floor hotel room to the melodic chanting of daily prayers echoing across the city, every sound has woven itself into the fabric of my experience. The horses and carts shared the roads with cattle and motorbikes, creating a vibrant tapestry of life. I recall children playing soccer in sandy fields long after the sun dips below the horizon, their laughter ringing out like music in the warm evening air.
As I reflect on my time here, I no longer see the empty water bottles strewn across the landscape or the plastic bags blowing in the desert wind. Instead, I see a family—a community rich in love and joy. This is a family that doesn’t judge or feel the need to give unsolicited advice. Here, I witnessed a profound love for life and learning, with relationship-building at the core of the culture.
Throughout this trip, I’ve often heard the comment that Americans think “time is money.” In Senegal, time is about relationships and community. Money does not hold the same significance; rather, the value lies in the concept of Kolere. If someone performs a good action for you, you repay that gesture.
When I initially thought I was here to bestow my knowledge, I was humbled time and again by how much I have received and learned instead.
So, with bags packed and cars waiting, it was time to bid farewell to our hosts. Hugs were exchanged, and in those moments, nobody wanted to be the first to let go. We shared one last tear, one last laugh, and one last goodbye. As I write this in the car on our way to Dakar, I am reminded that I’ve left a piece of my heart in Louga, filled with memories that reignite my passion for education.
A salty tear escapes, sliding down to my wavering smile. What is reflected in the heart will surely show in the face. Louga, you will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for the love, the lessons, and the unforgettable memories.
